Marrakech to Merzouga: Distance, Driving Time and the Stops Along the Way

The distance in numbers

Two independent routing services put the Marrakech to Merzouga road at 534 km and 553 km respectively; the difference comes from which turn-offs and detours you count. The legs matter more than the total, because each one is a natural place to stop.

Add the pass, the photo stops and a proper lunch and a single day is not enough to do the drive comfortably, which is the practical reason our itineraries spread the outbound drive over two days with a night in the Dades Gorges.

The route, stop by stop

The road leaves Marrakech on National Route 9 and heads south-east; the stops below are in the order you meet them. They are also the stops on our own itineraries.

Tizi n'Tichka pass

The first landmark is the Tizi n'Tichka, the pass over the High Atlas on the N9. The sign at the top says 2,260 m; a 2022 GPS survey measured 2,205 m. The road was built along the old caravan trail in 1936, and the pass is the high point of the road. Expect switchbacks, Berber villages on the slopes and a noticeable drop in temperature at the top.

Ait Benhaddou

About 170 km from Marrakech and roughly 30 km before Ouarzazate, a short turn-off leads to the Ksar of Ait Benhaddou, a fortified village of rammed earth that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 and once guarded the caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech. It has appeared in more than twenty-five films and series, and it is the first stop on our Marrakech desert tours.

Ouarzazate

Ouarzazate is the regional town at the junction of the roads to Zagora and to the gorges, and the home of the Atlas film studios that our tours visit. It is the last large town before the desert road turns east.

Skoura and the Rose Valley

East of Ouarzazate the road follows the Dades valley, past Skoura and through the Rose Valley, which our four- and five-day itineraries list among their highlights.

Boumalne Dades and the Dades Gorges

Boumalne Dades is where the two-day version of the drive breaks for the night. Just north of the town the Dades river has cut a gorge whose walls rise between 200 and 500 m. Our three-, four- and five-day loops sleep here on their first night; the six-day loop reaches it on day three, after two nights in Marrakech.

Tinghir and the Todgha Gorge

Tinghir sits on the second day of the drive, and the Todgha Gorge just north of it is the most dramatic canyon on the route: over about 24 km the river has carved a corridor whose final 600 m narrows to as little as 10 m across, with sheer walls up to 160 m high at that point and up to 400 m elsewhere.

Tinjdad, Erfoud and Rissani

After Tinghir the landscape flattens. Erfoud, about 50 to 60 km before Merzouga, is the gateway to the Tafilalet oasis and known as the city of fossils; the fossil mines and workshops feature on our Fes desert trips. Rissani, 35 to 40 km from Merzouga, holds its market on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays and stands next to the ruins of Sijilmassa, the trading city that controlled the caravan route until the fourteenth century.

Merzouga and Erg Chebbi

The road ends at Merzouga, the village on the western edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes, which rise to about 150 m. Ways to make the trip

• Driving yourself. The N9 and N10 are paved national roads. Allow two days rather than one.
• Coach. Supratours runs long-distance coach services to Merzouga; it is a full day on the road, so check the current timetable before relying on it.
• Flying part of the way. Errachidia has an airport about 120 km (around two hours by road) from Merzouga, with flights from Marrakech on selected days of the week; schedules change by season.
• A multi-day tour, because the stops are the point. Our three-day loop sleeps in the Dades Gorges and then in the dunes and drives back in a day; the four-day version breaks the return with a night in Ouarzazate; the five-day loop adds a full day in the desert before returning through Ouarzazate; the six-day loop starts with two nights in Marrakech before the same road.

How many days should you allow?

Two days is the minimum one way (Marrakech to Merzouga with a night in the gorges); three days is the minimum for a round trip; four to six days let you spend a second night in the desert and see the gorges properly. If you are continuing to Fes instead of returning, the road north from Merzouga is shorter, and three days Marrakech to Fes through the desert is a classic route. When to drive it

The comfortable window at Erg Chebbi is October to April, when daytime temperatures are milder. Merzouga's average July high is around 43 °C and its January nights average about 6 °C, so summer afternoons and winter nights both need planning. How long does it take to drive from Marrakech to Merzouga?

Nine to ten hours without stops, and longer once you add the pass, the kasbah and lunch. Our tours take two days on the way out, with a night in the Dades Gorges, and drive back in one long day.

Not directly. The nearest airport is Errachidia, about 120 km away, which has flights from Marrakech on certain days.
